Check Fred on immigration

If you go here http://www.fredoneverything.net/FOE_Frame_Column.htm

you'll find Fred Reed, redneck journalist and all-around cynic on immigration, from the viewpoint of an expat American living in Mexico.

Somhow all I can think of is the verse from Kipling's 'Natural Theology'

This was none of the Good Lord's pleasure,
for the spirit He breathed in Man is free
But what comes after is measure for measure,
And not a God that afflicted thee.
As the sowing, so the reaping
Is now and evermore shall be,
Thou art delivered into thine own keeping,
Only thyself hath afflicted thee!

It was good enough to pass along in emails to friends, so I did.

Fred Reed has remarked that we (Americans) have illegal immigration because "we" want illegal immigration. Well, count me out, Fred. I don't want it.

This is a battle for turf. If we won't defend our turf, we won't have any to defend.

It's possible he could have stated it more clearly, but I believe the essence of what he said, and could be said about a lot of things, is, "We want all the benefits without paying any of the costs."

Speaking of Kipling, there was a piece in the Financial Times discussing the relevance of "If" in today's society.

"Kiplings If has relevance for today's corporate leaders"
